Badgers (Meles meles) are wide spread in the UK but because they are mostly active at night (they are nocturnal) we seldom see them. They play an important role in nature (they are qualified ecosystem engineers), moving earth and eating a variety of foods (like earthworms, rodents, slugs, fruits, and carrion; they are opportunistic omnivores). Did you know they can dig a hole faster than a human with a shovel, and they can run very fast. UK badger setts typically contain 4-8 individuals.

Woody vines are not just in wild jungles, the humble ivy is our native version. Ivy doesn’t damage trees, but grows with them, providing excellent year-round shelter and nesting sites. Its late season flowers provide vital autumn food for bees and other insects, and the black berries feed birds in winter.
